Winter Mountain Skills

Learn to venture into the winter mountains independently with increased safety and confidence. On our winter mountain skills course you will develop the necessary skills and techniques so you feel better able to enjoy the challenges of the British Mountains at there finest – when covered in snow and ice.

Maybe you are a summer walker looking to head into the winter mountains for the first time. Or you may already have spent a considerable time in the winter mountains but always with more experienced friends. Either way we can build on the skills that you already have so you feel more confident to make your own judgements and decisions.

The first day or two will be heavily focussed towards learning the fundamental skills of good footwork, solid ice axe and crampon skills and avalanche avoidance and although these skills will be taught in context while moving around the mountains the distances travelled will be less.

For those on longer courses subsequent days will normally involve ascents of major summits in the area and further teaching and instruction will be delivered in context during the course of the journey.

Exactly what we cover depends on what your focus is and the length of your course but will generally include:

  • Use of crampons and ice axe
  • Avalanche avoidance
  • Weather and conditions
  • Clothing and Equipment for winter
  • Emergency Shelters
  • Winter Navigation
  • Snow belays
  • Use of a rope

There is an option to include an overnight journey where you will spend the night in a snowhole that you have dug and prepared yourself.

For the winter mountain skills course you do not need any previous winter experience, though you should have summer mountain walking experience. You should be physically fit and able to cope with 6-8 hours walking in mountainous terrain in challenging weather and conditions.
