Guided Winter Mountaineering

Enjoy the challenge and beauty of the winter mountains while leaving all the decision-making and navigation to your experienced guide. Maybe you lack the experience to venture out independently or perhaps you would like some assistance achieving a particular personal goal. Whatever the reason we aim to give you a memorable day out in the mountains.

Any of the mountains in the area could be ascended during this course but some of our favourite days out include:

  • Ben Nevis and the Carn Mor Dearg Arete
  • East Ridge of Carn Mor Dearg from Aonach Mor
  • Buachaille Etive Mor
  • NE Ridge of Stob Coire nan Lochan descending into the Lost Valley
  • Ballachulish Horsehoe

North West Highlands

Though we are usually based near Fort William we are always keen to explore the mountains of the far NW Highlands around Torridon and An Teallach. The extra driving is generally rewarded with big days out in grand wilderness where you may well not see another person all day. Alternatively it may well be possible to run the entire course based in the area. If you would rather your course was based in the NW Highlands rather than around Fort William just let us know when you make your enquiry.

For guided winter mountaineering you should already have experience of using ice axe and crampons in winter conditions. If you do not have this experience the first day of your course will be spent teaching you the basic skills to move around the winter mountains safely and with confidence.

Am I fit enough? Booking 5 days from 6.

Every year regular summer hill walkers and climbers come to Scotland to experience the mountains in winter and many are often unaware of the level of fitness necessary and the amount of hard physical effort required for a full day out. Rucsacs are heavier due to axes, crampons and extra clothing, and walking is more exhausting due to deep snow and strong winds. While most folk make it through a 2 or 3 day weekend course we have found that 5 days in a row on the hill can be too much for many people. One good way around this is to book 5 days from 6. That is you pay for 5 days guiding/instruction but have them over 6 days. In discussion with your instructor you are free to take the ‘rest’ day whenever you want. You may chose to ‘play your joker’ to give you a rest day after a particularly big day out the day before or you may chose to play it if the weather for one day is noticeably worse than any other in the week. This way you have a much better chance of having 5 good days out on the hill rather than trying to do them all back to back regardless of weather, conditions and tiredness.
