Introduction to rock climbing
The introduction to rock climbing course is a perfect way to start your climbing career. Designed for anyone with little or no previous experience of climbing, it is a comprehensive introduction to the sport. We will start at short non-intimidating crags and build up your skills and confidence so you learn to feel comfortable on the rock.
We will cover:
- belaying
- tying on
- rope work
- movement skills and techniques
- abseiling
- guidebooks
- route selection
- grades
- anchor selection and construction
- equipment selection
- and most importantly - lots of actual climbing.
We will visit single pitch crags (where the climb is less than one rope-length high) and depending on course length and numbers could include the opportunity to second multi-pitch routes (on higher crags where the ascent is broken into several pitches or sections) . We will often use outdoor bouldering (climbing close to the ground without ropes and harnesses) and indoor wall sessions to develop movement skills.
For the introduction to rock climbing course you do not need any previous climbing experience. You just need to be reasonably fit but far more important is to have a sense of adventure and be up for a challenge.

Ian, many thanks for an outstanding weekend - you judged our ability perfectly and tailored the programme accordingly. We will be talking out that final pitch for a few years to come.....
