Instructional Courses
Instructional courses are aimed at developing the skills to
enable you to navigate confidently in the British Hills. The low ratios
on all courses ensure a highly personalised service and allow the
instructors to make sure you develop at a pace appropriate for you. We
can assess the skills that you may already have before developing your
techniques and skills to cope with more challenging navigational
situations. How far we can take you depends on both the length of the
course and the level you are starting from. Typically for someone with
existing basic map skills a 5 day course is long enough to show you
(and give you plenty of time to practice) all the necessary skills and
building blocks to be able to navigate accurately in the British Hills
in any weather conditions. That does not mean we can turn you into a
Champion navigator in 5 days - you will then need to go away and
practice those skills till they become second nature.
Navigation Skills
General Outline: Learn all the
basic skills required for accurate navigation
Minimum Pre-requirements: A good
level of general fitness
Course Length: 1-5 days
Content: Depending on the length
of the course we will look at the elements of map reading, compass
skills and ground interpretation that go to make up good navigation.
This could include: map scales, map symbols, grid references,
orientating the map, taking and walking on a bearing. Distance
measurement by timing and pace-counting. Contours and contour
interpretation. Route planning and strategies for successful
navigation. And just as importantly, Re-location - how to find yourself
again if you do get lost! Outside the mid-summer months there is the
option of going out for a night navigation session to really test your
skills.
