Scrambling Instruction

What is scrambling? It is the area between walking and technical rock climbing. As such it covers a wide range of terrain. The aim is to move smoothly, efficiently and confidently over rocky terrain.

At one end there are short simple rocky sections where it is easier to use your hands as well as your feet even if only for balance and support. No rope or technical equipment is required and it can be a great way to escape from the main tourist routes.

At the other end grade 3 scrambles will for most people require the same equipment and many of the same skills and techniques as rock climbing as well as some new ones.

There is also of course a large middle ground in between these 2 extremes and this is where the real skill in scrambling comes in. Using the rope appropriately and safely when it is required, but not relying on it unnecessarily when on easier ground.

Our scrambling instruction courses will help you develop the skills to tackle scrambles confidently by yourself. For some this may be Grade 1 scrambles that they wish to be able to do without any extra equipment while others may be interested in learning to climb the harder grade 3 scrambles and learn all the ropework and judgements that are required for this.

We will use many of the classic scrambles of Snowdonia as our training ground. For those progressing to harder scrambles a days’ simple rock climbing is usually included to help develop the necessary skills and judgment.
